Sweden plans to reintroduce compulsory military service from 2018, eight years after it was abolished. The Scandinavian country, which has not seen armed conflict on its territory in two centuries, ended conscription after it was deemed an unsatisfactory way of meeting the needs of a modern army.
Really interesting. Is it worth it forcing people to do so, especially women?

I used to have quite a negative view on conscription, but if it's a matter of national security, so be it then. Also note that the reintroduction is because of actions of Putinstan.

I would say it is important especially for the women. If war would begin, do you wish women to know how to polish their nails or how to survive?

Of course they keep the calls which means they seek who is capable to be taken in.

No doubt ole Vlad is shaking in his boots.

And quivering at the thought of Swedish girls in uniform.

I have served in nations where the locals have conscription. It makes sense in a way.

If your draft board selects 10% to serve, that drastically increases how many people will enlist, along with how many people will go to college.

A functioning draft allows you to fill many civil service roles such as forestry and infrastructure [bridge building, roads and dams].

In Israel conscription includes daily historical lessons done at many archeologic sites, along with maintenance of those sites. It is national identity building for them.

Why shouldn't all citizens be involved in protecting their national interests? If you are going to conscript it should be for everyone, regardless of sex, or income.

I'm no fan of conscription, but the Swedes actually have a nation worth fighting for. With Putin nearby, I don't blame them for wanting to beef up their defenses.

Funny how that always works out to not apply to the politicians and their families.

Now wouldn't that have been wonderful to have had an equal number of women in our ranks during my time in our Army? It would have changed from being such bleak and wasted years, into a young man's dreamland. The young women would probably have really dug it, too.
