First, were slaves people? Other than white supremacists and some liberals, the general consensus is yes.
Second, did they come to the US to live permanently? For the vast majority, yes.
Third, was the US a foreign country for them? Once again, for the vast majority, yes.
So, unless you feel slaves weren't people (klan and some liberals), the definition fits exactly.
I think we agree. I definitely consider the slaves immigrants because they were given full citizenship after the Civil War. If Abe Lincoln would have made it illegal for them to stay and deported them, then they would have not been immigrants. I think it's pretty simple.
If I was descended from slaves I would spend a lot less time whining and crying about it and more time being thankful for my ancestors for toughing out their situation and giving me a chance at being an American.

Really? I've never read any accounts of Africans wanting to leave their home. They always had to be kidnapped.
Which really sounds more like hostages. Inhuman hostages because they were considered property.
Would it have been better if Abe Lincoln had sent them back to Africa with an apology and maybe a financial settlement?
