Collectively, young people hate being forced to buy health insurance which subsidizes the elderly but want free college subsidized by the elderly. Farmers are often Republicans who hate subsidies except farm supports.
We had a local Republican woman run for congress under the platform of "no more subsidies of any kind". After she was elected, she admitted that her family gets over $200,000 a year in farm subsidies. She didn't give those up after being elected either.
People in their 70s+ have medicare they paid into. They will continue to be insured and receive comprehensive medical care disappointing as it may be to you.
Are you 70+? My father (rip) died at 75. Medicare hardly covered any of his expensive heart and lung issues. He had to pay for it out of his own pocket when he retired. He made the mistake of retiring in a red state.

This is how it works. Most Americans are not savvy enough to realize when they are being bombarded with propaganda. When you tell millions of hard working middle to lower middle class white Christian folks that subsidies and welfare and entitlements are going to uppity blacks Muslims and Latinos they buy into it. They sooooooo want to believe that social programs ONLY benefit the scary OTHER that they overlook the fact that THEY are the primary winners of all that gov money. Ask around. How many people around you don't understand that fire , police, public school system and roads are all social programs..... I bet you can ask 100 public school custodians and Road crews if they benefit from social programs and they will say NO!!!! Meanwhile they earn a great living and benefits from the tax payer . It's amazing how dumb Americans are when it comes to civics .

Medicare pays 80% of hospitalization.
Many have supplemental plans to help pay for the 20%. Those plans typically had/ have annual/ lifetime caps.
I am personally aware of a handful of seniors that had to sell their homes to pay medical bills. Others used Reverse Mortgages to pay medical bills. They were on their way to outliving their savings and assets.

Strange situation. Of course without a supplemental policy, the Medicare patient has to pay the 20%. But Medicare would have covered the 80% unless non-approved treatments were used. Very uncommon with Medicare.
Let's be frank and set political correctness aside for a moment.
The sad reality is that 5% of Americans -- the vast majority of whom are elderly -- account for 95% of the health care costs in America. Our country is spending an enormous percentage of its wealth (taxpayer money and debt) to keep people alive in their 70s, 80s, and 90s. Limiting health care to only the elderly that can afford higher premiums will dramatically reduce costs, enabling Congress to reduce taxes (or debt). Once you understand this, the Republican proposal makes much more sense.
Source please? Because this article at least has some real numbers and they aren't even close to what you are claiming. Do the math yourself, there's no way you can support your claim.
Quote:
Senior citizens made up 13 percent of the U.S. population but accounted for 34 percent of healthcare-related spending
The government pays for 65 percent of the elderly’s medical expenses.
Medical expenses for the elderly more than double between the ages of 70 and 90. The average amount spent on medical care for an American in his or her 90s exceeds $25,000 annually, a cost based primarily on nursing home costs.
The poor use more medical goods and services than the rich and a larger portion of their expenses are financed by the government.
Medical expenses before death can be high but do not appear to be a major driver of increased medical spending in the U.S. Medical spending over the last year of life averages $59,100, of which 71 percent is covered by Medicare and 10 percent is covered by Medicaid.

I'm very familiar, had to fight with them over bills for my parents, it isn't perfect, but it covered most.

In 2011, Medicare spent $554 billion which was 21% of total US healthcare spending.
Of that $554 billion Medicare spend, 21% was spent on care during the last 6 months of life.
The oldest baby boomers began turning 65 in 2011. As I understand it, about 11,000 people turn 65 each day, right now. The daily number will likely peak in 2023.

Yes. I agree 100 percent. People should educate themselves. I also personally watched my father spend tens of thousands of his savings to cover specialists and surgeries and procedures and equipment that Medicare did not cover. I have the paperwork to prove it. Anyone that thinks that Medicare is a magic bullet is crazy or uninformed. I have a friend right now that's forced to sell his home because his wife is in a nursing home and his insurance WONT cover 100 percent of the cost. 500 bucks a day.
