The frostbite occurred in North Dakota not in Canada.
Mexico is known as less than a safe place to live and is well known for crime and corruption. Crossing their border on foot wouldn't guarantee they would not be put in jail for no good reason. The country is overwhelmingly Catholic and I wonder if Muslims would be welcomed with open arms.
It is possible to survive in colder climes when you have a furnace instead of A/C.
If you didn't have A/C in hot climates you wouldn't survive the heat so you stay in the cool house.
Conversely in a cold winter you wouldn't survive without a source of heat. With a furnace warming the house that is where you would stay, in the house , just like in hot places with A/C.
