Let's say a group of pioneers, during the 1800s, travelling along the California or Oregon trail enters a magical time portal that teleports them today. What do you think they would think of today?

Lots of fat people who can't take care of themselves. Then they'd go start a farm and get along just fine.

I think it would be more interesting if a group from today went back to the 1800's.

They would find people who on one hand, seem to be very smart, with all that new technology, but on the other hand, weak, child-like and incompetent in the basic things of life. I think they would be disgusted. Even more when they find out that a lot of these seemingly smart peope have to go to "counseling" to help them deal with their problems, and take pills to help them make it day to day.

I'll go with this.

What would a family from the 1800s think of today? They would surely think that Bible Scriptures have been fullfilled. The days of Sodom & Gomorrah.

They would probably be amazed at the medical advances that have been made, at how many children live to adulthood, how few women die in childbirth, and how few people starve to death.

I'm sure they would also be appalled at many things, but I suspect they would find the above developments nothing short of miraculous.

They'd think "men in the ladies room? Let's find that magical time portal so we can get the hell out of this crazy place and go back to when we came from."

Depends on where they pop up, I guess.

In the middle of a parade during Mardis Gras? Terror.

Some places in the West? "The cows are too big." "Why do they have so many deer and pronghorn?" "Holy smokes that's a giant wolf." "Cool. Look at all the lakes and ponds (they didn't have reservoirs)."
