The source countries have evolved over time. Most immigrants were dirt poor and not particularly skilled or educated. They tended to live in ethnic ghettos and shared apartments until they could afford something of their own. First generation did not assimilate well.

Refugee immigration peaked in the 1980's and they tended to be brown/black people. I have no recollection of public outrage. The 2016 number was a fraction of this.

Congresswoman Mia Love's parents came here on tourist Visas from Haiti and overstayed their time. The way the story goes, is they had $10 to their name and never took a dime from anyone. $10 did not go very far back then. How did they leave the airport? Where did they live? What did they eat? Back then, there was no Federal Law against hiring undocumented workers and I presume they were able to obtain employment. They, like the immigrants before them, got busy creating a baby with birthrights to increase their ability to import the rest of their family they left behind in Haiti. And they certainly did.

I have no issue with putting refugee immigration on the back burner until such time that the status of 11-12 million illegal immigrants is brought to a conclusion. We are not going to deport 11-12 million, otherwise law abiding people. There's push back for creating a pathway. And so by doing nothing, the can continues to kick.

We have had immigration laws since 1882 so no it wasn't legal to hire illegal aliens (no such thing as an undocumented).

Illegal aliens are law abiding people? Are you serious? First they violated our immigration laws and then they took jobs they weren't lawfully entitled to by either stealing someone's SS number or worked for cash evading taxes which are felonies. We don't need to deport millions of illegal aliens all at once just enforce the laws on the books as they make themselves known and remove all of the incentives for them to remain here and they will self-deport.

The only pushback for creating a path to citizenship are from bleeding heart liberals, those who have ethnic ties to them and Democrats that look at them as future Democrat voters. The rest of us who are law abiding have our own citizen's needs in mind and want them out of here.
