The story for how this Russian spy ring was caught was on Rachel Maddow and it is really interesting what two of the spies were caught saying in a Russian SCIF facility with binders of faux "spy" info provided by the FBI's agent they thought they turned...NOT Carter Page...
The two spys described Carter Page as someone who obviously wanted to make a "lot of money"...and if he brokered that 19.5% of the Russian oil company like he was offered then like he did make some money...

The standard for senior officials to learn the names of U.S. persons incidentally collected is that it must have some foreign intelligence value, a standard that can apply to almost anything. This suggests Rice's unmasking requests were likely within the law.

What’s striking about the NY Times story is the spin it took. Trump had previously claimed he had been “wire tapped” (quotation marks in his original Tweet), leading to media screams that he prove it. The NY Times’ own reporting proves that President Trump and his associates were spied on.
The Times, rather than admit Trump had been vindicated, instead focused its attention on the question of who leaked the reports to Nunes:

Do you realize that if Rice requested those names be unmasked without a court order or warrant that is a felony right? Do you care?
Remember when Obama supporters insisted "it was because of the video". Demonizing anyone who didn't automatically believe it. And when they found out Obama, Hillary, and Rice lied, they just turning their head away because they didn't like the facts.
