It's up to the President to decide whether or not to ask Congress's permission for something like a limited air strike. Keep in mind in so doing, you lose the advantage of surprise, since getting Congress's approval could not only take days but weeks.
Or years, the way our congress operates!

Why can't this be a one and done strike by the US? Assad used chemicals on his own citizens so we destroyed an airbase. Now we are done until he does something stupid again. To me this does not commit us to anything.
I think that's what people are counting on -- the show of force being enough to shut things down.
Problem is -- when you have a leader like Assad that will resort to chemical warfare -- who knows?
His purpose was to destroy the airfield, not to kill the Russians that were there. I guess you think he should have killed them and started WW III.
No, US military and many other militaries have given advance warnings ahead of strikes for centuries. We did it Japan for example. I only pointed out Trump mocked such warnings, and now he is doing the exact same thing.

I would guess this is pretty embarrassing to the Russians. Maybe they will amp up their efforts to prevent something like the chemical attack from happening again. Maybe Putin did think Trump was a patsy. Well, he doesn't anymore.

And that's exactly what it was. Use chemical weapons and pay a price. Simple.
Who the hell cares? Get beyond America-bound partisan politics at the moment. That ass Assad used chemical weapons on children - dozens of them died in agony. The US just wiped out the airbase from which that chemical child murder was launched. Every other country looked around said some words and uhmmed and ahhhed.
What you are just discovering Trump is a hypocrite? Well done - everyone else knew about a year ago at the least.
This was retribution for those kids, to hell with skirt-clutching progressives.
I don't see him as a hypocrite at all. The reason is, while one may have a belief that things should work a certain way sometimes situations exist that cause you to change your belief or act in contradiction to said beliefs, especially as POTUS.
I wonder what the hue and cry would have been had Trump done nothing? I'd bet we'd be hearing "oh Trump is a Putin loving baby killer supporter", he needs to resign and let someone in who'd doooooo something...
He has authority to combat terrorists, which is why he bombed ISIS targets. Congress did not complain about that, but they did complain about going after Qaddafi in Libya. Going after Assad is same as going after Qaddafi.
It isn't about the people of the Middle East. If it was we wouldn't be so quick to slaughter tens of thousands of them ourselves.
Then who the heck is it about? Sick of seeing us pick sides in ME wars and participate in regime change while a worse set of actors take power. No one there worth an American life. We spent $60 million in Tomahawks last night...why? No different than our intervention in Libya or Iraq.
