I wouldn't call him a hero, but he was right, and the historical portrayal of him reminds us who writes the history.

This.
Not everything McCarthy did is defensible, but clearly there was a real and significant pro-communist element in America in the '40s and '50s. It's interesting to speculate what might have happened if there had been no push back at all against this influence. How much could they have accomplished if left unchecked?
So why would we be threatened by Kibbutz in Israel? That was about as communist as you can get!
People are free to interact economically anyway they want. When I started framing houses and we all split the money evenly, I suppose that was communism.
I think some of you are confusing personal and community behavior (many churches are communist) with an actual system of government. If we had gotten to the point of having a Communist Political Party (major) with over 30% of the population supporting it - then I can somewhat understand the big corporations and the existing two party system being against it. But nothing of the sort ever happened....so it was all made-up fear.
Just like today. We Americans are no longer the home of the brave but more the hiding place of those scared of just about anything and everything.
Yup.
In WWI, being a German-American, no matter how patriotic, was a cause for suspicion. And in WWII, being a Japanese-American was just the same.
Communism before WWII was only one more extreme political party. We had dozens of them at the turn of the 20th century.
Any time the nation is in deep duress, there are always a lot of citizens who want an easy target to vent their fear and anger on, and we always have some group to use as the target. Today, it's them. Tomorrow, it could be you.
.
I am a quarter German, and the fear then was well founded. Bund rally Madison Square Garden -20,000.
6 dead in molten metal pit at Remington Arms during WWIi suspicious "accident".
4 German sabotage agents land on Long Island. If they get to electrical room under Grand Central, we can't transport soldiers. It required just sand to kill the machines used.

Very true. Russia had the requirements of the atomic bomb from such spies before we used it.
He's often treated as a villain in pop culture, but, knowing what we know now, it appears that he was RIGHT about Hollywood and a bunch of other things. If he'd stayed in power, Clinton and Obama would never have happened to America.
I think Trump should reinstate the Committee on Un-American Activities. My only reservation about bringing that back is that I'd hate to see such a thing in the Left's hands. They've already shown what they'd do by their IRS targeting.
Senator Joseph McCarthy only went after communists in sensitive positions (had security clearances etc.) of federal government. Any activities to go after folks in Hollywood, etc. were done from the House of Representatives, not by Senator McCarthy.
I for one approve of what Senator McCarthy did because I believe communists have no place working in any sensitive position in federal or State government. Furthermore after the Venona Project files were declassified, it proved Senator McCarthy to be correct in almost all of his accusations.
McCarthy completely fabricated his "evidence" of communist subversion in the federal government for political gain. He was a first rate liar on the order of Donald Trump. Not a hero - not even close.

Making blanket accusations of large groups of people when only a few of that group are guilty of what you accuse them of may be 'right' but it's hardly correct. He was a paranoid drunk that loved to hear himself talk, nothing more.

And had he not created so much baseless paranoia in America perhaps LBJ wouldn't have had such fear of ruining his image by appearing soft on COMMUNISM! and the Vietnam debacle wouldn't have happened to America.
