I hope more career Republicans do the same to make way for those outside Washington.
^ this why my first thought as well. Then I thought "Well maybe he wants to challenge Hatch and wants to give him some time to gracefully back out of officially running again" (Hatch has been having a Hamlet moment as of late with regards to him running for another term).

Oh and one last thing. I hope Evan McMullin runs for his seat and wins!
He said he's not running for any office, so no he's not going to Senate. Maybe he sees the writing on the wall with the Russia scandal and wants to get out before all the Republicans get taken down.

There will probably be quite a few republicans/neo-nazis/ultra-cons, etc., who will not want to subject themselves to the public humiliation of landslide defeats in 2018 and with not try to be re-elected.

The so-called "Freedom Caucus" will disappear, as any of its members who try for re-election, will attempt to distance themselves from it. Those among them who think that their constituencies of conservatives in their districts, will lock them back into office, would be overlooking the surge of moderate republicans and all democrats, who would repudiate them. The outrage among so many, at what this mockery of an administration has brought us, will bring a sweeping purge of them all.

British sources also talked on twitter that the Kremlin has kompromat on Chaffetz which may be part of the reason he's stepping down. Hopefully Ryan and McConnell step down next.

Rumor has it that Russia was holding blackmail material on Chaffetz, and forcing him to do protect Trump. FBI learned about it.

Aside from the Palmer report being questionable, if they truly had major blackmail power, why isn't he resigning? Leaving in 2 years doesn't seem like much of a threat.

Apparently, he's hinted that he may leave early.

As to the Palmer Report being questionable, what I've notice is that it is usually ahead of the game, reporting political developments way before those same stories show up on the news.

"It’s not that we have a crystal ball; it’s just that corporate news outlets are notoriously slow when it comes to reporting stories that aren’t yet trendy."

Here's a partial list of the times Palmer Report was early to a story, and subsequently vindicated - Palmer Report

Though there clearly is a slant to the articles, I've yet to see them promote report out right lies.

I think Palmer sometimes draws conclusions that are questionable. But they do so based on actual facts at least.

Chaffetz is so partisan it's ridiculous. He won't investigate anything trump&co does. Same attitude as Rand Paul, who said it's a waste of time for republicans to investigate other republicans. You shouldn't have that role, then.

Apparently some members of chaffetz ' s team registered some domain names leading people to think he's looking at a potus run in 2020. He's got a set, I'll give him that.
