Probably varies with the community. The muslim woman I know best is married to a jewish man, and they would never in a million years subject a daughter to this. (Obviously, neither one of them is very orthodox.)

I first read about it in Ms magazine, and vividly remember writing letters to my congress folks in support of the law when it was first proposed.
As I recall, there were a few conservative religious groups who opposed passage of the US law on the grounds that it was an infringement on religious rights. Fortunately, most US religious organizations had better sense.
