Hmm, wonder how common this practice has become among the American Islamic communities?

FGM predates Islam and seems to have originated in Africa.

Old and New Testiment as well as the Quran are silent on the topic.

FGM became a federal crime in the US in 1997. Likely Somalian refugees fleeing civil wars brought this barbaric custom to the US.

Strip the MDs of their licenses and lock them up.

Prosecute the parents for child abuse and remove the kids from these homes.

Probably varies with the community. The muslim woman I know best is married to a jewish man, and they would never in a million years subject a daughter to this. (Obviously, neither one of them is very orthodox.)

I'm very glad that these perpetrators are being found and charged.

I think MGM would be an adequate reciprocal punishment for those who perform, observe and facilitate such a disgusting and inhumane act.

500,000 girls are in danger of this barbarism right here in America and where are the women's rights groups.

???? It was women's rights groups who agitated for the US to ban FGM in the first place. And also led the fight to push the UN to denounce it.

Brief history here - http://www.equalitynow.org/sites/def..._FGM_in_US.pdf

Islam before oath. And don't Islamists claim that the religion of peace requires them to follow the "law of the land?" Give me a break and lock this Islamist the hell up!

Yeah where are the Pussyhat brigade when we need them??

How about the anti gun groups? They should be marching on Chicago to stop the carnage there that happens everyday with idiots using illegal owned handguns.

What is it with these feel good groups that seem to be more fluff than substance?

Should we really be surprised that groups such as this Somalian community that still believes in this horrible practice that they have refused the melting pot of America to setup their own little Somalia in Michigan.

I'm very surprised that we haven't seen more examples of Sharia law within our borders.

I know.

I first read about it in Ms magazine, and vividly remember writing letters to my congress folks in support of the law when it was first proposed.

As I recall, there were a few conservative religious groups who opposed passage of the US law on the grounds that it was an infringement on religious rights. Fortunately, most US religious organizations had better sense.
