The other night I was at a social function with people from various backgrounds and social status.
Social responsibility came up.
Since the very few who run the world have chosen automation in many fields, what are humans like myself who truck supposed to do?
They've automated factories, working on self driving cars, allowed illegals and h1b/ h2b visa holders take other jobs to keep wages suppressed.
This isn't a life isn't fair debate.
The group all agreed that the few who run the world like Soros, Koch brothers, Rothschild, Zuckerberg, Jobs, Gates families have a social responsibility to their fellow human beings who lives have been destroyed or are going to be destroyed by this.
We also agreed that either the whole system of consumerism economy needs to come to an abrupt stop, or those mentioned need to take care at the same level those displaced had been earning.
I'd love to hear what some of you think.
As we know, with population growth and such, something needs to be done.

You bring up an excellent question.
The wealthy view fulfilling their social responsibility as something that their foundations do. Their corporations' responsibility is to the owners and shareholders. If automation earns an extra buck, well then, the choice is easy.
But what's to be done about the increasing number of Americans who will never be able earn a halfway decent living as the jobs that are long gone?

Basic income. It's going to become a necessity because there is no stopping automation. It will come eventually to just about every industry and profession. People will not be able to earn a living through no fault of their own. There will have to be some kind of social safety net. It's inevitable.
Either basic income, or on the flip side massive poverty like in the 2nd and 3rd world countries. Look at the slums in countries like India or Brazil - that could be the future of America. If you think the rich are going to pay to support masses of unemployed think again. They don't in countries like India or Brazil, why do you think they would here?

The idea of a guaranteed income for non-workers is going to be a tough sell.

Agreed. At least until it becomes so obvious it can't be avoided any longer. But you're right, we are in for a lot of pain before we reach that point. It's not going to be pretty.
The Soviet Union guaranteed "everyone a job", we know how well that worked.
Which is great from a historical perspective, but its 2017, and this is a problem unlike any ever seen before.
Try to realize that whats coming is NOTHING like we have ever seen before.
As many have stated, basic income is all but inevitable. And even then its a stop gap. Its inevitable....when we can actually afford it. The Soviet Union couldn't, and we cannot. But as we replace people we become increasingly able to afford it. And its inevitable. The questions we need to ask are how we will deal with it, what will happen as work disappears, and what wealth will really mean.
Seriously, some of the stuff coming looks like magic.
Extended lifespans? Trials are underway on humans on things that rejuvenated elderly mice back to their youth. That alone will blow apart our ideas of work.
Neural lace?
4-5 years for repairing disability, 10-12 for enhancement that is truly freakishly amazing.
We're at the corner of the changes coming from exponential change. And we are unprepared.
People are freaking out about the impact of self driving cars, and the unemployment. But whats coming is far far more extreme.
