Amid the continuing fallout over his decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, Trump was considering an appearance at the FBI's J Edgar Hoover Building in downtown Washington, DC. The White House publicly floated the idea as recently as Thursday morning.
Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders, asked by a reporter whether such a visit was imminent, replied, I believe that it's very likely that takes place sometime in the next few days."
But that idea was dropped later Thursday, administration officials said, after the FBI told the White House the optics would not be good. FBI officials made clear that the president would not draw many smiles and cheers, having just unceremoniously sacked a very popular director.
And FBI agents said that, while many of them voted for Trump, after the president unceremoniously fired a very popular director, few were ready to meet him at the bureau with open arms.
"My sense is most FBI employees feel a loyalty to Comey," one person who works at headquarters told NBC News. "And whether they agree or disagree with the way he handled the email case, like and respect him ... Trump would not be well-received at headquarters."
I figured he'd just bring his paid cheering squad like when he went to the CIA and bragged about his EC win in front of the wall with the stars representing the fallen agents.
Seriously, since when does this administration worry about optics?
FBI agents changed their profile pictures to Comey's, an honor usually reserved for when one of their own has died. Is trump gonna fire them all?
Why would they even think it would be a good idea.
That's the issue -- not that he was told he wouldn't be welcomed -- the fact that he and his administration have no clue, no ability to anticipate reactions.
They are floundering every day. Conflicting statements, comments, excuses and a President who says things that make his communications staff and those charged with defending him, as if they are just making it up.
Waiting for someone to chime in with the accusation that all FBI agents are now wild-eyed leftist snowflakes... I had thought of saying "un-American commie pinkos," but the right's loving embrace of Putin and Co. sort of negates that old chestnut, doesn't it?

You summed it up very nicely. I never thought of it that way, but that's exactly how Trump appears. For a guy who's so obsessed with everything American, he sure sucks up to the Russians a lot.

Right, when trump pulled the defensive missles promised to Poland just to please Putin, I thought what a tool. Putin is playing trump like a fiddle. Oops! that was obama Putin was playing like a fiddle!
Well thank goodness Trump never defended putin in a national prime time prez debate! whew
