I think a huge part of the conservative appeal is that a very large section of society feel that their happiness is dependent on a large chunk of the population being in a worse situation than they are. So they can feel better about themselves. This guides their way of thinking. So they will resist sensible policies, even if it helps the country as a whole, because it means that the bottom section of society will be given a hand up.
Forcing others to give up part of their labor without them choosing so is not"working together".
Stupidest thing I ever heard.
So you think no one should be taxed? Many if not most people did not consent to be taxed, yet everyone is forced to pay taxes. You don't have a choice. Name one civilization past or present that does not tax their citizens? Good luck with that.

“The vision of the anointed is one in which ills as poverty, irresponsible sex, and crime derive primarily from ‘society,’ rather than from individual choices and behavior. To believe in personal responsibility would be to destroy the whole special role of the anointed, whose vision casts them in the role of rescuers of people treated unfairly by ‘society.”

I don't subscribe to the philosophy of Sowell. I think of him as a cross between Bastiat and Friedman, both of whom I disagree with.
what you mean to say is "real" conservatives. Because polling data on self identification and habits say most Republicans fit the everyday definition of conservatives
most of use simply define conservative as religions, and that is true of most of the Republican party.
Most liberals (you know, the party that's supposedly against stereotyping) define conservatives as religious.
It came to me recently, the two are so different because they have a different philosophy on life.
Conservatives believe in "the carrot and the stick", and believe that life has to be exceedingly hard and difficult to motivate anybody to do anything/be productive
Whereas moderate liberals believe that we still do have to work, but would like to work together to make things just a bit easier.
I believe that the conservative philosophy is rooted all the way back to the Calvinists and Puritans who founded this country, the Puritans believed that if you were happy, that you were commiting a sin....
Thoughts?
To put it simpler Democrats believe in a team concept when it comes to running the country (We're all in this together), whereas Republicans believe in the individual (You're on your own)
