Those aren't a freebie public assistance program like Welfare, Food Stamps, Medicaid, Section 8 Housing, etc. One must have paid into SS and Medicare to be eligible for benefits.

You people have real interesting rubrics to measure the worthiness of recipients of publicly paid benefits.
How do you think welfare, food stamps, medicaid, housing is paid for? TAXES BY THE WORKING AND MIDDLE CLASS. MANY people who've paid taxes, at some point, have had to collect one or several of the aforementioned PUBLICLY PAID benefits.
Its okay for olds to collect Social Security but not okay for a young family to take advantage of Medicaid. GMAFB

People pay taxes when they work and those same workers often need help in the form of food stamps or WIC.
The poor don't pay the federal income tax that funds federal means-tested public assistance program benefits. A surprisingly large percentage (about 27%) of the 1040 filing population isn't expected to contribute at all in regards to federal income and payroll taxes.
Data for 2015:
Federal Income Tax Units: 171.3 million (Excludes those who are dependents of other tax units) Federal Income Tax Payers: 93.8 million (Tax filers with a total federal individual income tax obligation of over $5 for the year, already withheld or not)
A tax unit is an individual tax return filer, or a married couple who file a tax return jointly, along with the inclusion of all (if any) dependents of that individual or married couple.
Tax Units with Zero or Negative Individual Income Tax:
77.5 million. 45.3% of all tax units.
Tax Units with Zero or Negative Sum of Income and Payroll Taxes:
Does it surprise anyone that about 27% of all tax units pay NO Federal Income Tax AND NO Payroll Taxes whatsoever on their earnings? That's almost always due to the various refundable tax credits offsetting them both, and almost always benefiting low to middle income earners. So while they take Food Stamps, Medicaid, etc., benefits, they certainly pay no federal taxes for them.
The first and most important duty of the fed is to defend the country. If we can do it with no soldiers elsewhere, great. My guess is we have to have some amount of spread across the globe. But, I'm for making Europe pay the cost for our military presence in their countries. They should have to bare some of this cost.
As long as you continue to push for that, your complaints about helping the less fortunate here are worthless in my book.

Stop what? Didn't you read the NY Times article? People in NJ and NY are already getting the homes they're living in for free after failing to make a single mortgage payment in 5 or 6 years. Bank of America, alone, has 20,000 outstanding mortgages that are 5 years or more in arrears.
