The sad part is it was likely his dad that put him up to it.

It is not obviously a clock. It is obviously an electronic assembly with a display. It could be any number of things. When operating it may be an obvious clock. But what it obviously is not is a bomb.

And I would agree a teacher could remove it as a distraction and return it after class or send it to the Principals office. Same thing as a game device or a cell phone.

If he wants to shake down someone for $$$$, he could try taking the clock on board an American Airlines jet. Or take it to a pop concert. He'd have the snot kicked out of him at either.
Kid makes a vaguely bomb like device, another kid draws a picture of a gun and the result by school authorities is the same.

Just put it in your luggage and it will go on AA or anywhere else. Carried much more sinister stuff than that many times. Before 9/11 you could have taken it in carry on but now you would have to check it. I even flew across the country years ago with a box full of contaminated pig blood beneath my seat. That of course was well before any of the security stuff.

Note that any lap top would be easily modified into a very difficult to detect lethal device. Likely the source of the discussion about lap tops on planes from Europe. And that it could happen has been known for a long time. The sniffer tests were an attempt to prevent such a device from penetrating.

Your words: And really it looks like a clock. And nothing else. and Need to see it plugged in ...has numbers...they tell time...it is quite obvious.
You have been trying to convience posters that it was obvious that it was a clock.

And its wasnt a game or a cell phone. What happens when a kid brings a toy gun or anything resembling a weapon? And the kid was told to put it away, keep it out of sight. Why because it resembled what a reasonable person might think is a briefcase bomb. Why because it was meant to resemble what a reasonable person might think is a briefcase bomb.
But yes I believe school officials overreact concerning a lot of issues but I also understand currently they shoulder a lot of liability and need to cover their arse.

And an interesting example. Should a high school call a bomb alert every time it encounters an unaccompanied gym bag? Give the bomb squad lots of practice.
He got in trouble not because they believed it was a bomb. He got in trouble I believe for not complying with the authorities.

Unless it was dressed up to look like a bomb.

No one said it was an actual bomb. It was an OBVIOUS hoax bomb.

When plugged in and operating it is obviously a clock. When laying there not plugged in it is obviously not a bomb. Simple huh?

No it does not look like a bomb and no one involved who seriously knew anything about it thought it was a bomb. That is why the kid has a case.

First thing you put in a hoax bomb is something that looks like an explosive. See any of the cartoons.

There is nothing in this device that looks like an explosive real or imaginary.
