Preliminary information indicates that the suspect was on the MAX train yelling various remarks that would best be characterized as hate speech toward a variety of ethnicities and religions. At least two of the victims attempted to intervene with the suspect and calm him down. The suspect attacked the men, stabbing three, before leaving the train.


Ya, no threats to harm him were made, he just went off, without the main focus of his "hate" unharmed.

He hasn't stated it, but I'll assume that it's something like this:

One or more bystanders interject themselves into the situation by saying, "Shut the **** up or you're I'm going to kick your ass".
Christian doesn't shut up.
The bystanders threaten Christian (possibly with a knife, or the knife is brought out during the ensuing struggle).
Christian overwhelms the bystanders and leaves the train.

That could certainly be exactly what happened.



It could also have gone differently.
Christian verbally assaults two women on the train.
One or more bystanders repeatedly ask Christian to stop.
Christian becomes more belligerent.
One or more of the bystanders places himself between Christian and the women.
Christian pulls a knife and attacks the bystanders and rushes off of the train.



Or
Christian verbally assaults two women on the train.
One or more bystanders repeatedly ask Christian to stop.
Christian becomes more belligerent.
One or more of the bystanders places himself between Christian and the women.
Christian physically threatens, or attacks, the bystanders.
One of the bystanders, feeling threatened, or being attacked, pulls his knife his knife in defense.
Christian takes the knife and kills the bystanders and jumps off the train.


Or many other possibilities.

I don't know which it was.
