In general though, when you hear the government announcing that they are here to help, it is time to run.

The elephant in the minimum wage debate is that adults living on minimum wage are financially distressed because The Rent Is Too High. A major reason rents are too high is that municipal governments have an incentive to promote high rents and a disincentive to reduce rental costs.

Local governments ARE here to help - they are here to help the Property Class, which has vested financial and lifestyle interests in keeping rents high and minimizing the proximate supply of poorer residents.

$15 even for bigger cities is risky . Employers have already stated they intend to cut back on labor and automate as much as they can .
Unemployment is likely to go way up with a $15 min wage because demand for labor would go down .
It would add more risk for a business and getting info business is risky enough .

Of course not all businesses are the type that mostly employ min wage workers but a ton of them are .

It will make it harder for the poor to find jobs too .

Why? As the owner of a number of rental properties, if the MW goes up I'll raise rents on my lesser properties accordingly. Same if a basic income were implemented. Up to whatever the market will bear.
better to have you subsidize renters that need more affordable housing than taxpayers. not fair but why not have a small number of people take the hit rather than the entire population. won't happen because govts want ever more tax revenue.. they are addicted.

The small businesses cannot afford to hire at $15 an hour. Large retail stores are closing all across the US because many people are shopping online, rents are high, especially in Malls, health benefits are costly and most companies can't afford a pension plan. The young part time workers are especially vulnerable to the $15 wage, as they are not hiring them if they have to pay full time workers with benefits, especially ACA. When I hear Pelosi speak out on anything, I wonder why her aides or herself don't really research all the repercussions this will cause. IMO the Democrats can't see the forest past the trees.

Plus the people working at fast food places would get less hours than they had before the minimum wage increased.

How would you propose reducing rental costs, given that we're talking about privately owned properties?

have to love the dem playbook - $15/hr minimum wage / healthcare for all / open borders / etc. that's a great plan (sarc.) they must not have read the estimated projected $400 TRILLION shortfall in global pensions and nearly 100 TRILLION shortfall in promised liabilities here in the US.

What if the market is manipulated in a way that creates winners and losers?

What about small museums for example that make very little profit if any. Some of them hire older retired people that need extra income I could see those people losing their job.
Museums typically get donations and endowments, in addition to admission (tickets)

Oh the "buying votes" argument. Politicians are representatives of the people supposedly to serve the people. Why do you think Trump promised health care for all at a lower cost, wall to be built by Mexico and taking on Wall Street and big pharma? Of course it was all a lie and cheap campaign rhetoric, but he did it because people are struggling and they want someone who stand up for ordinary Americans against the ruling donor class that buy the puppets people vote for.
