From the articles, it seems that this was simply a passing fancy. Of course he would have been interested--Britain controlled that part of the world and he was involved militarily and politically. Of course he would have had Muslim friends. And, as the articles, state, people go through different stages and there would have been a stage when he was first attracted and it seemed new and exotic to him.

He was for England and would have been appalled at what's happening lately.
