And if their people (who are American citizens) want to be a state? What does being a state have to do with losing their cultural identity? Why would that have to change? I don't see any specific reason.
It would be the same thing if any foreign country decided to become a U.S. state. They would lose their independence, etc.

But PR is not, and has not been for a very long time, an independent nation. They are a part of the USA, and their citizens are ALSO American citizens.

I was making an analogy. I guess it went right over your head. PR is still not a state and if they became one they'd lose their independence to "become" their own country.

It did not go over my head at all. I just don't think there is a direct analogy. PR is culturally-distinct, but so are other parts of the US (this was what your initial post was about).
I've said this entire thread (and to you in previous posts) - let their people decide: become a US state and get all of the citizenship rights that all other Americans have, or become an independent nation.

They are not independent and have not been independent for 100 years or more. The US spent decades thwarting attempts by the Puerto Ricans to establish an independent nation. Some of the worst behavior by the US in its history including a law making it illegal to espouse independence.
We mugged, oppressed them and now we own them. Time to give them a fair shake...Statehood. And maybe 40 or 50 billion in reparation for our sins.

What? Hell no!
We don't owe PR anything. They're already completely sustained by the United States. They have reaped the benefits of citizenship for 100 years.
