I think that's pretty much a myth to *some* degree. Although very popular. We wouldn't have 80 lb anorexics dying if starvation mode really existed as people hoped.

I do think when you first start restricting calories, your body can go into a temporary "conserve" mode here and there. I do not believe that people who are overweight yet claim they are eating 1200 calories are in starvation mode.

Pushing the "starvation mode" fallacy in the current form that's out there puts people in the mindset that they cannot succeed but putting their fork down.

I’ve experienced it myself. But keep believing what you want

I don't like Bigbrotherism.

But the fact is, when the construct of society is very negatively impacted by so many obese/morbidly obese people, YES, the government should push to correct this problem. Just like it is a good thing that less and less people smoke, the government saw a need to step-in and try to lower the smoking-rate, good!

And I haven't experienced it.

So you're saying you are overweight but cutting back on your eating does nothing for you? That your body slows down and holds on?

You continue to believe that you are doing everything correctly. Most people cannot objectively monitor their caloric intake. If you were to be watched 24/7, all your food measured, etc. and you truly stuck to a food deficit, then you would lose weight and your body would not freak out and hold onto fat and keep you obese. If it does, you are one of the rare people who have some other metabolic disorder. Rare.

Why is it that the poor who DON'T get Food Stamps DON'T "plateau" at being obese in such high numbers?

And he starts eating those cookies if he sees me eating them. He's super disciplined, but temptation is a ***** when someone else is constantly enjoying it in front of you.

So for his health's sake, I eat his bird diet in front of him, and pig out on more filling foods when he's not looking.

Low-fat vegan fare
? No wonder he gains weight so easily. Sorry you've both been mislead that a low-fat diet is good for weight-loss. It's quite the opposite.

Same for diet sodas. They actually make people gain weight. (All sodas are unhealthy and lead to weigh-gain, but artificial sweeteners create additional health problems.) Drink water instead.

I think what jumped out at me the most was that everyone of these high school kids was overweight. I didn't see one that wasn't clearly overweight. This is not something I pay attention to when I watch TV but it was so striking. It's really kind of sad.
It's funny you say that, because I was sitting at a red light the other day on a street that borders a high school. I happened to notice gym class was going on at the time and I was shocked to see the majority of the kids were overweight or obese. And I'm not talking about a kid that's maybe a little husky or is holding onto a little baby fat, I'm talking kids that could stand to lose thirty or forty pounds. I can't believe it's gotten this far out of control.

As far as the causes behind obesity, I think it's just our culture and lifestyle. There's no longer a SAHP who can take the time to provide fresh, healthy meals. Most parents are working long hours and at the end of the day when everyone's tired, hungry and cranky it's much easier to grab a pizza or swing by McDonald's. Back in the day fast food was a once in a while treat, now it makes up the bulk of these kids' diets, especially if they're low income.

My girls played multiple sports growing up. I went back to college and also had a part time job when they were in school. Either I prepped the night before and in the morning threw everything into a Crock Pot, or I made SALADS. No cooking with salads. About the only time we ate fast food was when we were on the road traveling long distances to their games and tournaments.

Seriously, Pizza and McD's gets gross and disgusting after a point.
