How well did that strategy work over the last 60 years?
Not very.
That's OK though, since it's just another EO type decision, it will be quickly reversed once Trump is gone.

Yeah, but what of the damage to the respect for the ability of taking America at it's word being only as good as the next four year dude?
Sitting across the table in the future, some committee charged with the responsibility of achieving something important is going to be faced with "we've been here, done this and have the "T" shirts only to have the U.S. renege on it's word; no thanks; we'll deal with (fill in the blank) instead!"
Oops, Russia is already a primary source of money for Cuba.
"Exploiting the Cold War, Fidel Castro was for decades able to rely on strong Soviet backing, including annual subsidies worth $4-5 billion, and succeed in building reputable health and education systems."
i am fully aware Russia is there. I am middle aged, i have heard the story listened to my mom and dad tell it.
If you think we cannot woo them , you are sorely mistaken. the real issue is Trump wants to chase a few votes in Florida and thinks this will make them love him and the GOP in 2018 , 2020.
We could bridge the divide, and Trump has not even been able to make up a reason to do what he is doing, he has tried but the lies ring hollow to everyone outside of his core crazied fans and handful of ex-pat cubans with chips on their shoulders 50 years later.
It used to be that Americans just traveled to Cuba via Mexico, and the Cubans did not stamp your passport but gave a stamped piece of paper in lieu of the one in your passport.
That's still what many do. You can get to Cuba a million different ways to avoid all the drama. Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Bahamas, etc. People will just continue to ignore Trump's edict.
This is a colossal waste of time, does nothing, doesn't give Florida to the Republicans, and is ABSURDLY on the wrong side of history.

That's the price the American people will pay for having voted in the idiot Trump. Stupid decisions always have a price, that just the way things are. The rest of the world has long since made peace with Cuba. Time for us to do the same - after all, WHAT has the embargo really accomplished? Not much. It certainly didn't result in the removal of Castro.
Do you think it is a good idea to continue the restrictions on tourism?
Do you think it will force Cuba into becoming more freedom loving to the people?
It's a terrible idea. We've been restricting them for years and they didn't really improve. No reason to believe they will now.
Raul Castro will die soon and when that happens, Cuba will have the opportunity to really change for the first time in decades. We should be a part of that. An ally to them.
I thought the Cold War was over? The whole reason Cuba was on our **** list was because they were in bed with Russia. Now our president does business with Russia so why are we bothering with this nonsense again? Because a bunch of old Cubans in Florida want us to? Great. That's sound foreign policy.
