When I am in other countries, for example, if someone has a job that offers a lot of vacation time or a pension, others tend to say "Wow! That's great and something I want too." while here in the US, in the exact same scenario, people respond, "I don't get that! Why should you?"
You see the exact same thing with healthcare in the US. People literally vote for and support legislation that hurts not only others, but also themselves.
Why are us Americans willing, and often for, racing to the bottom?
The race to the bottom in this country is the same as every other country that embraces the fiction of the collective.
People clamor for the government to give them something that they cannot afford. So the government confiscates wealth so that they can provide it. But now the people are poorer, having been looted by the government. So something that they could afford before, they can no longer do so. Then the people clamor for the government to provide them with what they can now not afford. So the government confiscates more wealth so that they can provide.
Rinse and repeat...
Now the people can afford nothing, as the government confiscates everything. The people then clamor for the government to provide them everything, which it cannot because it can only give you what you have been robbed of in the first place. (and actually far less because government costs money just to exist and it is always very inefficient)
So in the end government provides whatever rations it can muster, which of course is not enough to satisfy the serfs. So to placate the masses and increase the rations, people must die so the demand is reduced.

I get your over all premise of government support is bad, but I do not see how this relates with American's willingness or even want, to race to the bottom.

Lack of empathy coupled with ignorance.

American society has reached a point where we have extreme individualism to the point of being antisocial. There's little or no concern for anyone outside of one's own immediate family. It's socially destructive.

Trump voters support Donald because "he makes liberals mad."
Even though MILLIONS OF Trump's rural, poor voters will be negatively impacted by Trump's new healthcare plan.
