Oregon’s state legislature just reduced penalties for drug possession in a bill also intended to reduce racial profiling by law enforcement agencies.

H.B. 2355 passed both the House and Senate last week and reduces possession of illegal drugs to misdemeanors rather than felonies as long as the person in possession does not have prior drug convictions. According to a press release issued on July 7 by Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum, the bill provides for “the reduction of penalties for lower level drug offenders. The bill also reduces the maximum penalty for Class A misdemeanors by one day to avoid mandatory deportation for misdemeanants.”

Are they buttressing this with increased treatment availability? If so, this is smart move. Around here, treatment is darned hard to get.

Good. Criminalizing the possession of dangerous drugs does not deter use, it simply makes criminals out of users, placing greater strain on families, communities and the criminal justice system.

This won't do much good if there isn't an expansion of available treatment for these people.

Even so, it's a good move generally. Frees up space in prisons and saves tax dollars.

There we go down the slope starting with legalizing marijuana. Of course proponents only want weed legalized, not those other drugs. Why not, just legalize all of it and we can have heroin dens and bump shops. Meth malls. Just take the malls that are dying and make them into big drug bazaars.

Strip malls have already been taken over by trashy tattoo shops, vape stores and bars.

This is a horrible analogy. Your neighbor's heroin can't kill anyone who doesn't do heroin. The same can't be said of her gun.

They will eventually land in jail for either crimes they will have to pull off to get drug money or just because they are tweaking or getting too many possession charges.
