EMTALA should be changed to allow hospitals to charge a copay upfront for non-life threatening conditions. The triage nurse should determine if the person should pay prior to being seen, and be given immunity from liability. You can pay $20 or $50 to see a doctor in the ED for the back pain you have been having for 6 months. That would cut out much of the abuse.
Then everyone would go to the ER. Just to walk into a doctor office here is $150.
I have to pay my copay but they ask for it after I'm the back or treatment rooms- I was in horrible pain for gall bladder- ended there a week- but they got my X on the ipad to collect the $125. I think once they get ins. approval, they should leave me alone!! - I make sure I have the $$$ before I go, on some credit or debit card as I only take ID and one card if I fall out or die--- or wished I would die- I do not like the process-

I had a similar experience. Kidney stones... Brutal just doesn't say enough.
As I signed in, gasping for air and doubling over, I had to handover my insurance card, my ID and fill out paper work. I am sure someone who is knocked out or bleeding to death doesn't have this required of them, nor should they.
It was annoying and inconvenient. As I filled out the paper work and dug though my wallet, I was happy I keep my wallet organized. After the fact I wondered why we hold citizens to this level of accountability, but not illegals?

oh they do the same--- they simply do not collect and they work out a plan- but finance people still hold your gizzards in their hands until you sign something --

Any respectable person pays for all goods and services they receive.
Of course. This is one thing that you need to look at when buying a HC insurance plan. We are skiers, so we make sure we have easily accessible ER coverage.
Goodness, what a stupid question. I can just imagine someone who is not even conscious, life or death issue, and everyone is fumbling around trying to determine if this person has the means to pay or not; not a country I would want to live in for sure.
I've been in a country like that.
When I was in the Philippines, when you showed up at the ER, someone took a quick look at you and determined how much further care would cost. If you didn't have that much on you in cash, they showed you the door.
The ER should be set up for the worst case scenario. It's unfortunate that many go to the to ER in a panic and aren't in need of emergency care, but that shouldn't be what motivates possibly hurting those who need the ER.
