That is because it was a projection of the conservatives. Now we see the real story. Trump admires Russia and it's authoritarian leader and his supporters love him for it. Turns out that , just like Trump, everything his supporters accuse someone else of, is exactly what they themselves are doing.
They LOVE authoritarianism and hate Democracy. They want to use government to halt any dissenting voices. It is why they are trying to diminish the role of media in our democratic process.
One tiny detail eludes them, getting rid of that pesky Constitution that defeats them at every turn!

Republicans don't like Russia now, but they are a reality in which we have to deal in a complex world. To ignore them would be dangerous.
Right now we are in the process of eating their energy lunch. Trump is allowing the use of our fossil fuel resources. We can replace their energy with cleaner, cheaper energy in European, and possibly Asian markets. By introducing more supply, we are also keeping energy prices at reasonable levels. The Russians HATE this, and hate Trump for allowing it as it is their main source of revenue.
