CBS/NBC is free non-cable broadcast:

through the first two weeks of the season, CBS's Sunday NFL windows had averaged 13.9 million viewers, down 10% versus 15.2 million last year. Sports Media Watch said CBS’s 8.4 rating for its Week 2 single header lineup was the lowest for a Week 2 single-header since at least 1998.

NBC had a particularly ugly night with the Packers-Falcons. The game drew 20.2 million, well down from last year’s Week 2 game (Packers-Vikings, 22.8 million) and the Seahawks-Packers in 2015 (26.4 million). It was the least-watched Week 2 Sunday Night Football game since 2008. Crupi reported NBC’s three primetime games so far had averaged 22.1 million viewers, down 7% from 2016.

I quit pro and college football years ago. Certainly frees up my time.

As for the pros: it is now a 'sport' in which millionaire players are playing on teams owned by billionaires. I discussed this in a prior thread several weeks ago. However, I looked it up and the average ticket price to attend a game is $172.00.

New stadiums are being built with taxpayer money (in most instances), and the owners make sure that there are plenty of boxes and suites for the 'high rollers', including corporations. If a 'working class' person can no longer afford to go to the game (and take the wife and kiddos), it is natural that, with time, said fan will lose interest in the team. Ditto if the team owner threatens every few years to leave the city for greener pastures.

College: when they got rid of the old 'bowl' system, and then tossed the Southwest conference, they lost me. I liked the Cotton Bowl, with the Southwest Conference winner playing some worthy opponent. I loved having all the bowls games on New Years Day. All gone.

Odd fact: back in the 1980s, televised bowling (i.e., with a bowling ball) had higher ratings that professional football. The 80s were an odd period.

The NFL is the most profitable sports organization on the planet. $13B annually.

Most people who say that they've stopped watching the NFL weren't big football fans to begin with. Hardcore football fans don't care that a few dozen players refuse to stand for the National Anthem before the game. That's not why we watch.

Hell, outside of playoff games and the Superbowl, the National anthem isn't even televised. They don't ever show it on TV.

People like to find a problem where none exist. People have many options for entertainment and as the season began, natural disasters are an issue. The NFL is making lots of money and players are signing bigger contracts.

The NFL controls the players. There are rules for everything from uniform colors, what they can have attached to uniforms, game rules, and conduct when it comes to being on the field, off the field, talking to referees, celebration and sportsmanship. They are even controlled when it comes to new conferences, when they will appear, for how long etc.

All the NFL has to do is tell players to respect the country that gives them right to play, or don't play.

You'd be wrong on that, plenty of hardcore sports fans are watching less games than they used to. They haven't stopped watching but they tune in less. Overexposure is the main problem but the whole disrespecting the country issue with the NFL not doing anything about it has soured things for a wide range of fans

Right, Kaepernick should have been disciplined, just like players would be in the NBA per NBA rules

So if ratings are down 10-15% you don't think the NFL will notice? Elections, hurricanes and we'll probably hear something else next week. Behind the scenes they are likely in panic mode trying to find a way to appease both the BLM and pro-America crowds. Perhaps this is what the "social activism month" thing is about. The NFL can basically say hey, we'll give you social activism month and you guys can stop protesting because this shows that you made "positive" change happen (and the pro-America crowd will settle down when players aren't causing as much of a scene).

NFL is in a pickle right now. Another 10% dip and billions upon billions are out the window.

The game has been in decline since the early part of the last decade, the anthem thing is just the icing on the cake.
