Actually, given trump's clear history of saying what he "thinking about"... it just might be that trump had been talking to them about it, and let it slip in his offhand way that yeah, he knew they were doing it. Kinda like he told mueller not to look into his finances. See how that works? It is something akin to a Freudian Slip.

If Russia meddled as some claim how exactly did they meddle?

Russia is desperately dependent on oil and natural gas exports.
Why would Russia support a candidate that wants to fully develop and utilize every economically viable form of competing energy reserves here in the US over a candidate that hates coal and fracking?

Since the FBI was never allowed to examine the DNC servers, and since they have been destroyed (apparently with hammers), we'll never know, to the full extent, what really happened.
What we do know for sure is that anyone could have gained access to that system.
If the Russians did gain entry to the system, you can be sure they didn't leak any of it because they could have blackmailed a then-likely president H.R. Clinton with the contents.

Mr. Trump Jr. & Mr. Manafort have not been issued subpoenas. Not yet. Time will tell.
Imho, all is still 'clear as mud'. Although one would think &/or expect some 'amping up' of US security-related issues already revealed by present findings.
