Because it's illegal to work with a foreign adversary to get dirt on your political opponent and use it to swing an election. Especially if you're offering them something in return, like say lifting sanctions.

Yeah, no one sane believed for a second that Trump didn't know about that 2016 meeting. Even the C-D paid shills probably choked on their posts supporting that lie.
