3. they gave Saddam a place to hide his WMD stocks.

But the main problem of Assad's regime is that Assad is an Alawite--on the Shiite side of the 1400-year-long Sunni-Shiite war. Assad is allied with Iran.
Saudi Arabia is at war with Iran and the US is it's proxy. The US attacks whoever Saudi Arabia directs the US to attack.

Saudi Arabia once held a lot of sway in keeping world trade in American dollars. That influence is quickly slipping away but we act like nothing is changing.
