If we have the technology to run the economy without human labor, we'll also have the technology to run the military without human labor.
Politics is all about keeping your coalition as small as possible while still maintaining power, so that coalition members can get as much loot as possible.
Even if you don't know it, you are in a coalition with the government as a taxpayer. You are useful to them because you generate wealth. But what happens if they can generate wealth without you? Then they don't need you anymore.
So the robot military will do away with the human flotsam and jetsam while the robot economy hums along.

How can you provide a basic income when we can't even balance the budget without basic income? You think people who make $25/hour are going to sit by and watch other people just live for free without working? I'll go on the dole.. work sucks. I can stretch a penny pretty far.

The thought is is with mass automation, production costs will go down to nothing, but there will be no one to sell to, since most people will be automated out of jobs. So it's either machines just produce and everyone takes, or UBI.
You are thinking in the current paradigm. And besides, UBI will not be means tested, so working would supplement it, not cause it to decrease like current assistance.
