The 5 US big cities with the fewest immigrants - Memphis, Cleveland, Detroit, Baltimore, and St. Louis - aren't exactly GOP friendly. even though 2 of those cities are in red states and 2 in purple states, and all are in states with Republican governors.

We are where we are due to support from both sides (albeit for different reasons).
hey get out of here with your real world common sense. You are supposed to just pretend Democrats want open borders instead of the reality that most dems want to maintain our borders, restrict illegal crossings and limit legal ones as we have done for decades...

The idea that the dems want porus or open borders is a lie intended to scare people into voting for the GOP.

Lets not forget Obama deported vastly more people than Bush and both had 8 years.

Yeah, sure, it's all about the Dems.

"...But many in the GOP are opposed to reshaping the party’s immigration policies in Trump’s image

There are already early signs of pushback from multiple factions within the Senate GOP conference to the legal immigration limits, including members who are worried about the impact on businesses.

Republican lawmakers have shown little appetite for another big debate on immigration...."

This type of thinking is an example of why most minorities and immigrants who are now citizens are Democrats or Independents.

That is true. Small foreign-born populations in most of those cities. These cities used to have more foreigners. Their children assimilated and moved to the suburbs. Those cities are bleeding out population.

That's really overstating or exaggerating the approach. It's more that Democrats don't go out of their way to demonize Latinos as "criminals" or paint them as "illegals" the way that the Republicans do. Folks don't seem to remember that a lot of Latinos in California used to vote for Republicans - before Governor Pete Wilson decided to make demonizing immigrants as an political wedge issue in a desperate reelection ploy in 1994. I It worked for him (once behind, he managed to win) but had long term consequences.

And you'd be stupid to write off a fast growing demographic which is younger in age.

Problem is that the Republicans could have appealed to Latinos with their religious and family cultural appeals - but if they're seen as hostile, it's a no go.

That's also what's happened with Asian Americans as well - as recently as 1992, more of them voted for Bush I over Clinton.

Not sure about Memphis, but the other cities I mentioned were all major destinations for immigrants 100 years ago, more than any California city at the time except for San Francisco. Those cities were all in better shape when they were major destinations for immigrants.
