After a day of work at the Engineering Research Center at the University of Arkansas, Kyle Quinn had a pleasant Friday night in Bentonville with his wife and a colleague. They explored an art exhibition at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and dined at an upscale restaurant.
Then on Saturday, he discovered that social media sleuths had incorrectly identified him as a participant in a white nationalist rally some 1,100 miles away in Charlottesville, Va. Overnight, thousands of strangers across the country had been working together to share photographs of the men bearing Tiki torches on the University of Virginia campus. They wanted to name and shame them to their employers, friends and neighbors. In a few cases, they succeeded.
But Mr. Quinn’s experience showed the risks.
A man at the rally had been photographed wearing an “Arkansas Engineering” shirt, and the amateur investigators found a photo of Mr. Quinn that looked somewhat similar. They were both bearded and had similar builds.
By internet frenzy standards, that was proof enough
Was there similar outrage when Trump posted equally egregious fake news??
Thought so.
.
Actually no, you didn't think because this is a serious non-partisan issue. (Right wing Internet groups were doing this to ANTIFA people too fyi.)
It's happened before and could get people killed or at least ostracized.
There have been people misidentified by zealous neighbors as sex offenders, felons and a host of other mistakes that have lead to death threats, police showing up (and shooting them by accident) and so on and so forth.
I am not sure there is a way to stop it from happening, was pretty much inevitable from the point in time @ which basically everyone had hi def cameras and video cameras in their pocket linked to a global information network.

Concur completely. On the doxxing thread, I asked the question what if they get the wrong guy? Given the intense emotions over everything happening, this could really cause some serious misery to a wrongly accused person or even injury. It really needs to stop.

If a deep pocket does it like a news outlet or someone famous then you can sick a lawyer on them.
If it's just Dave the internet poster that works at the Sheboygan Best Buy does it then it gets much harder.
Might be able to go after the site owner where these people are posting this stuff....but again, if they have little money you'll be in trouble unless you can do it yourself so to speak.

Stuff like this has been happening forever. Olden days it was just simply looking too much like a wanted poster.
