That's because they were not really socialist, and their leaders knew this. It was sold to the people as socialism but they were anything but. All these societies had unequal balances of resources, the antithesis of socialism.
I reside in Brazil where the major left-wing party has publicly demonstrated support to Maduro. How come people still think that communism and socialism works?

That would be wrong. If you don't like socialism, that is ok, but you should know something before you decide to not like it, i.e. not like it for the right reasons. Socialism doesn't say anything about freedom of speech etc. Fighting opposition is not limited to left governments. It is simply a trait of dictatorial, oppressive regimes, both on the right and the left. Just observe how Trump is fighting the media and anyone else criticizing him...

I am not in India, but most hospitals in Europe are state-run and they work just fine...
