The problem wasn't as much about what he said but how he said it.

As soon as Damore seemed to infer that women were biologically inferior to men, that's all most people heard and they ran for the hills. He uses the same language to describe women as racists use to describe blacks or other non-whites (they are biologically inferior to whites). As soon as he raised the issue of biology he immediately alienated 99% of his audience, especially his co-workers.

He could have gotten his point across without the use of such a loaded term. A better way to make his point would be to say something like: women tend to shy away from tech jobs due to their personal preferences, culture, and how they were raised. That's a perfectly reasonable thing to say without raising the thorny topic of biology. But he dug his own grave when he did.

People who are good in math and science have a stigma of being nerds and social outcasts. Since women tend to pride themselves on their people skills, being seen as a nerd or socially awkward is the last thing they want. That's all he had to say or something to that effect.

Excellent interview -- which is not something I would say about most of this guy's appearances. This was truly eye-opening.

A couple of my favorite comments:
Quote:
Google 2007: Don't Be Evil
Google 2017: Don't Be Logical

^Those are equivalent statements to a post-modernist.

Google 2027: Don't Be Human
Google 2037: Death to All Humans

Nice job Google. I used to hate government intervention, but now I want you regulated like the utility you are or broken up in an anti-trust action. You cannot be trusted to wield this power.

I was always a geek in school. In my last serious sys admin position, I found out I was being paid 30% less for the same job description as a colleague, though my system was more mission critical, and I worked way more hours. I don't think the owner of the company even realized that he was valuing me less. Until I quit. The writer of this screed... he made some points, but then he hit left field and he hit it hard.
