DETROIT (AP) - Half of Detroit’s eight mayoral candidates have been convicted of felony crimes involving drugs, assault or weapons. Three of the contenders on next Tuesday’s primary ballot were charged with gun crimes, and two of them were charged with assault with intent to commit murder, a Detroit News analysis shows .
Some of the offenses date back decades. The most recent was in 2008.
Political consultant Greg Bowens says there are candidates in every election cycle with past hardships. “ Black marks on your record show you have lived a little and have overcome some challenges,” Bowens said. “They (the candidates) deserve the opportunity to be heard, but they also deserve to have the kind of scrutiny that comes along with trying to get an important elected position.”
State election law says convicted felons can vote and run for office as long as they’re not incarcerated or guilty of certain fraud-related offenses or crimes involving a breach of the public trust.
I'd say at least 3/4 of pols and wanna-be pols I met back in the Mid-Atlantic where I lived....were criminals. Of course, many either don't get caught or they get caught by other "criminals", namely the judges and cops that they hired and pay.
It's a revolving door and even the most cynical person would be amazed at the level of degradation among those who get into politics at even the local level. Oh, our small town was GOP and wealthy....and everything from murder to sex dungeons were involved in just one ongoing story. But you'll never hear about it because the judge stopped the trial on the day it was going to start...because the perp copped a plea...only because the same city/county agreed to give his GF a 150K plus benefits job in the country (do-nothing, no-show type)...
And so it goes. It really makes me chuckle when these people are called "public servants" who "sacrifice". My wife made the mistake of running for..and winning...a seat on this town council. At the first party she attended, the county bigwig attempted to cop a feel...and it was obvious that he had done so (probably successfully) on dozens of other women who won office. The dude was even of the opposition party!
A drug dealer has a much higher morality level than most pols. Really.
I take it they are all Democrats , another city the Democrats and the black civil rights movement and the 1960s ruined . They haven't had a republican mayor since around 1957?

I fail to see how this very necessary civil rights movement back then "ruined" this particular city.......
I know Trump loves the uneducated, but even those with primary school on their resume know that Detroit lost more than 150,000 good paying jobs....and it wasn't because of one political party or the other.
Sometimes history and economics bites you in the arse. But you know what? I'm from Philly and that city as a DUMP even as recently as 20 years ago. Today it is thriving...amazing.
The wheel turns and things change. I'm not going to blame the Ohio opioid crisis on Republican Rule nor their loss of 100's of thousands of high paying jobs on the GOP. I won't blame the obesity, STDs, shorter life spans, worse educational levels or lower incomes of many "red" states on the GOP (or maybe I should)....rather these things tend to be accidents of history and economics.

You have no idea how Detroit works if you think it is that simple. Like, zero. Detroit will continue to vote Blue and it will continue to improve. I know that sounds impossible to people like you, but it's happening already. Maybe you didn't get the news on that one. Do you read news?
The 1967 riots were a long continuation of things brewing for decades. There were riots breaking out there in the 1940's under Republican leadership. Look it up. Educate yourself and then maybe you can step to the forum like an adult. And to diss the black civil rights movement is pretty much a full admission here you are a narrow-minded bigot. I'll bet you think Trump is the Second Coming of Christ.

The civil rights movement wasn't the problem. It was all the rioting, followed by increase in violent crimes, armed robberies and break ins that drove whites out of the city. The city progressively descended into chaos following that. Later, the crack epidemic really turned the city upside down. The story of Detroit is a very sad and heartbreaking story for America, especially when looking beyond politics, the influence of unions, and all the other subjects people usually focus on. Real people/families suffered for no good reason whatsoever.
As for Detroit improving... Well, when you've hit rock bottom, you have nowhere else to go but up I suppose. It could be described as a dead cat bounce. We'll see. I know several naive, impressionable liberal types who have invested real money in Detroit, hoping to capitalize on the long awaited recovery. I wish them all the best, because I would like to see the city make a real, meaningful comeback. I would like to see more than just small victories in a sea of despair and human misery.
