What do you do when you need a break from politics?

I read a book, or watch a historical documentary - you know, get away from the current crazy by watching the crazy from years past. Sort of like watching "Game of Thrones," without having to pay for HBO.

I run my head into a brick wall.

I think of it as practice for when I re-engage the political process.

I just turn the channel on the TV, turn off the radio and don't click on anything on the computer that is political including visiting this forum.
I also stop reading posts and stop talking with my liberal friends who are convinced that Trump is Putins puppet and he is doing everything he can to destroy America.

When all that fails I go run some model trains in my backyard.

Reading is good, I also break out the old vinyl and listen to music I haven't heard in a while, sometimes while cooking some new dish I've never attempted before. When all else fails I go take a walk on the beach which never fails to improve my mood.

What helps is to look at politics not as the life and death struggle that some insist it is. It's mostly show boating and posturing.

Look at it as entertainment. The current entertainer in chief in the WH provides LOTS of comic relief on a daily basis.

I watch some people that I suscribe to on YouTube (e.g. Adam the Woo), read, or write. Sometimes I watch movies if I can find anything good.

All I need is to take a moment to reflect on the current lives of my friends and family, neighbors and co-workers. The people with whom I interact on a face-to-face basis daily. They are all doing pretty darn well, they're healthy, their kids are thriving, they are living in warm homes with food on the table, and everyone is enjoying pretty good prosperity. The reality of my life and that of those around me does not offer nearly the same bleak outlook that I see in these forums.

Real every-day life trumps an echo chamber Internet forum where the most extreme of people assemble to exchange "sky is falling" anecdotes. That knowledge is my equalizer.

Oh, yes...cooking! Cooking is good. A beach would also be good, if only we had one here. Closest I can get is to go fishing with my housemate at our friend's estate. She has a wildlife preserve with a private lake, and it's lovely. Still not a substitute for sand, though. Dammit.

You're right, there are lots of little blessings in life. I do know a lot of people whose political views align rather closely with some on here, particularly those on the right (this is a very red state), but fortunately, most of them appreciate a break as much as I do!

I really enjoy these threads, by the way. I feel the key to us all engaging each other in a more friendly manner here is to actually talk to each other like rational human beings about some less-controversial everyday things that affect us all - like ketchup on hot dogs! Once you've found a connection with someone else here, the temptation to rip them to shreds over a matter of politics becomes less tempting.
