I reside in Brazil where the major left-wing party has publicly demonstrated support to Maduro. How come people still think that communism and socialism works?

Most successful countries vary between 20% socialist/80% capitalist (USA) and 50% each in the case of the Nordic countries....both models work if you control corruption. Every country in the world that has a terrible economy also has little to no control on corruption.

People with common sense and experience in the real world understand that. Academics, career students, government officials and others who contribute little will continue to push for more government intervention, based mostly on their lack of understanding of reality.

Six years ago Bernie said Venezuela and Argentina realized the "American Dream". Now look at these countries....socialist hell on earth for their citizens.

American socialists are so clueless and dangerous to our way of life.....

Socialism and the capitalism practiced in the United States are both bad.

I don't live in Brazil and know very little about Brazilian politics, so I can't speak to Maduro.

What I do know is that here in the US, we often consider welfare to be a form of socialism, when it is not. Often, we call Scandinavian countries 'socialist' when they are not. They are largely free market states that have a robust social welfare safety net that is particularly effective at taking care of individuals. It is in no sense of the word "collectivist," it is hardly socialist in nature, and nothing about it even vaguely resembles communism. Yet people, including those who would support the American government adopting some of their policies, often consider is socialism, most notably Bernie Sanders, who I hardly see as being an actual socialist.

So I honestly cannot answer rather or not people think socialism works or not. The reason is becasue I have almost no faith that most people can correctly identify socialism at all.

Bernie's example of the "American Dream" country today:

From the moment it opens at 8am each day, the Símon Bolívar bridge between Venezuela and Colombia heaves with people.
Up to 25,000 Venezuelans come to the sweltering border town of C̼cuta each day Рmany of them lugging empty suitcases to buy basic foodstuffs such as rice, flour and pasta that they cannot find back home.

“No country is perfect but in Venezuela people can’t dream of a future for themselves,” said Ramón Araújo. “I would love to have stayed there, but there was no way.”

Meanwhile, the country is plagued by hyperinflation (predicted to reach 1600% by the end of the year), plunging supplies of food and medicine, and spiraling rates of murder and malnutrition.

You are absolutely correct. Socialism is one of those terms that depends on who you ask.

Socialism is defined as collective, usually government ownership of the means of production, but in our modern day, more importantly would include joint ownership of capital, banking, housing, etc.

Today, there are very few true socialist countries, but they include North Korea and Cuba. All of the Scandinavian countries, capital, lending, housing and most industry is all in private hands, with high regulation and taxation.

Trump is the road block in the path of the road to socialism we were on. If he does nothing for the next 3.5 years he is a success just by being in the W.H. He really can't play to much golf when the congress is so dysfunctional it sends little of anything his way to sign.

If Communism does not work with its centralized economic planning and control how does the "Capitalist" world explain China? Communist China is implementing and nation wide plan to control the world wide manufacturing market with Chinese exports. Their centralized plan is working quite well.

Our decentralized Crony Capitalism is not doing as well because it has eliminated most of the risk involved in investment. At least they think so. These financial manipulators have lost track of the idea that wealth is created by farming, manufacturing and mining. It is only transferred from its creators to the manipulators by the corrupt money men. The employees that created the wealth are simply left behind as jobs are eliminated by transferring them to the Communist Chinese or replacing people with machines. Both of these impoverish the people tat are supposed to buy the products. Ignoring that is foolish.
