"...Some white Americans like to dismiss slavery and past injustices against blacks as something of the distant past and therefore they should move on. Contrary to this, white supremacists don't seem like they want to move on from the Confederacy era. They also use the excuse that because slavery happened before they were born they are not responsible for the problems that blacks experience today.
The problem with whites denying responsibility for the sins of their fathers is if they use the same tools their ancestors used (hatred, superiority, racism, and racial discrimination) including the symbolism (historical statues and flags) to antagonize black people, then they are perpetuating the same evil their ancestors did. And because they do this they cannot absolve themselves from not been responsible."
Half of my family arrived here after 1920. The other half lived in the north, mostly in West Virginia, who broke away from Virginia because they didn't believe in slavery.
For someone to say I'm responsible simply because I'm white makes them the racist, not me.
if we dont learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it. but we cannot live in the past either, if we are to move forward as a people, we have to leave the past behind us.
but lets examine the past here a bit shall we? too many people are just looking at what has happened in this country only, and they forget the world history on slavery. for instance, every race has been subjugated to slavery to every other race at some point in history. the jews for instance were slaves for 2500 years of their 5000 year history.
and how about the fact that african tribes bought and sold slaves long before the white man came to their shores? and how about those same african tribes sold their own people to the white man for slaves? and how about after the civil war in this country, the freed slaves were offered the chances to go back to africa, and when they did, they gathered together and started their own country called liberia, and with in ONE generation, they went back to the buying and selling of slaves.
come on people, slavery has been illegal in this country for more than 150 years now, its time to leave it in the past, and look towards the future.
all articles like that written in the daily kos does is promote hate and discontent in this country for no good reason.
Blacks are entirely responsible for their own misery. They live in a country of opportunity and a social safety net that dwarfs anything that they would have access to in any sub-Saharan nation, or anywhere else on earth their own runs things. Both the American governement and American private industry do take responsibiity through affirmative action, diversity programs, etc.
Nor is there any great lingering white racism. Asians do better than whites, and Hispanics, who often come here without legal status or even language skills, are quickly catching up.
Some blacks have made it. We have a black president, if no one noticed. Blacks Senators...black Supreme Court justices...black billionaires...
But in general, blacks linger in last place. Why? Crime, illegitimacy, drug use, gang affiliation, and just plain not paying attention in school. In Detroit, for example, less than 10% of students are even average at math, while statistically, less than 1% are above average. You are not going to get ahead by declining your free education and crying that it is white people's fault.
Illegitimacy is destroying black prospects, as are the still absurd incarceration rates among black males. More than any of it, there is the culture noted by black celebreties such as Chris Rock, where blacks attack other blacks for "acting white" when they obey laws and obtain an education. As Michelle Obama herself noted, black males have to stop thinking of hip hop and hoops as the only honorable pursuits in life.
Again, a tough love message. Ball is in your court. Asians and Hispanics have shown you that if you want the good life, nothing can stop you. But Trump has shown you that whites are tired of the crime and whining, and the good old days of white guilt and easy shakedowns are not coming back for you. What is more, there is plenty of evidence that Asians and Hispanics are slowly but surely re-thinking their commitement to redistributive economics as they become more affleunt, so the writing is really very boldy written on the wall.

I think this is the argument for "Reparations" being paid to blacks today, for the slavery of yesterday. It does get brought up every now, and then, especially by black activist, community organizer types.

The focus on US history is something that annoys me the most. There are people with college degrees and professional jobs that act as if white people are the biggest bad guys of history, and those are the ones you'd expect to actually know basic world history.
I mean honestly, the white westerners were the first to abolish slavery and are the societies people run to for a better life or to take advantage of the programs set up for them. Then they complain about how evil white people are...
It's either a complete disconnect from reality and ignorance of the big picture, or they know they can play on that generosity and open-mindedness to guilt free stuff out of them. Depends on the person I guess.
Anyone fixated on Whites in the US being responsible for slavery needs to look at this Slave Trade by Volume map. The US was just a tiny blip. About the same number of slaves were shipped to the tiny island country of Barbados, and many more times the number of slaves were shipped to each, South America and the Middle East:
