The electoral college was put into place by our founding fathers because they did not the think your average Joe was up on the issues enough and/or did not have the intellectual ability necessary to exercise the incredible power of a direct vote for president.

Guess what? They were right then and nothing has changed in the last 200+ years.

Nonsense. Complete nonsense. American voters are dumb so we're going to...give small, rural states disproportionately large power? How is that premise even related to that conclusion?

In 2000, was Bush elected by a special panel of intellectuals? No, he was elected by the hick states, and since their votes count more, he won.

The electoral college serves one purpose: it shifts power (unfairly, in my opinion) from large states to small states. It has zero to do with the intellect of the country's voters.
