Your N.Y. Times article is of course misinformative. AntiFA are mostly thugs, hired to perpetuate violence against those the DNC do not like. They are the ones who knocked over a CNN cameraman in Charlottesville, they are the people who burned down Berkeley when Milo Yiannopoulos was preparing to give a speech. They were the violence at a Boston peace rally. The N.Y. Times won't tell you what AntiFA really is. They are anti first amendment, they are fascists they are the DNC KKK reborn.
It's a pretty balanced article by the New York Times - these Antifa people are Violent.
They actually believe that Violence is the only answer for their imagined grievances.
The core of the original Antifa was in Germany and they were a combination of Socialists & Communists.
Today - they are the same Socialists/Communists, against Capitalism & against the US System of Government, as they have always been. One of the core groups is in NY City and was born in the Occupy Movement - which never died, just went underground.
You can let other media define Antifa - OR you can read from THEM exactly who/what they are, just as the young lady in the NY Times article said - they want a WAR and are not afraid of the battle.

If Trump is to be inaugurated at all, let it happen behind closed doors, showing the true face of the security state Trump will preside over,” the announcement reads, “We must take to the streets and protest, blockade, disrupt, intervene, sit in, walk out, rise up, and make more noise and good trouble than the establishment can bear. The parade must be stopped. We must delegitimize Trump and all he represents.” One member of the “D.C. counter-inaugural welcoming committee” commented anonymously that housing space for 1,000 visiting radicals, in both church halls and houses, had been organized by their group alone. New York anarchists are raising funds to rent whole buses to attend. And, as historic anti-fascist mass protest dictates, there are plans for a large black bloc—a spectacle both intentionally threatening and anonymizing. The expectation of altercation with Trump supporters who will also descend on DC is high.
You will notice that all this "Antifa" openly admits they are Anarchists and that they planned all these Violent confrontations before Donald Trump was even elected. They began at the Trump Rallies and went all out after the Election. There are those on the Left, even the Far Left that are very concerned with this Violent group - they are correct to be concerned. They have no respect for our Government, no respect for Law Enforcement and are admitted Anarchists. That is NOT a "winning" deal for the Left.
Confrontational means? Is that how you describe setting fires, beating people, breaking windows, while hiding behind a mask?
Funny how the right cannot distance themselves enough from the alt right, but the left actually softens the definition of fascism when it comes to the fraudulently named antifa.

the PROG-LEFT has no intention of distancing themselves from ANTIFA or any other violent group. Notice what they do, these groups go out and do terrible things and the PROG-LEFT says "see what the right is causing" or "look at the violence created by the right"
all while knowing it is their storm troopers doing the deed.
Opposing Fascism does not automatically make one a communist or socialist. History is not so black and white as your POVs would have someone believe.
I do see White nationalist/Neo Nazi facist groups marching - cursing minorities, women, certain religions. I don't see marches around me full of Antifa advocating anarchy or communism. Antifa member(s) didn't drive a car into a crowd of people they didn't like hitting over 30 (note the similarly to the Barcelona attack). Who is the bigger threat to personal and public safety ? One who advocates hate or the one who advocates against it - even through confrontational means ?

You need to learn more about Antifa. They ARE a Communist/Marxist hate group imported from Germany.
They are the ones that got the snot beat out of them.
Be careful of using a narrative created by your mainstream media, it can come back and bite you.

Zoom in on her right hand, you will see she was attacking him with a broken bottle. Your tight video gif tries to hide the assault weapon she was using. She was using a weapon to attack a man and got punched before he was maimed. THAT is AntiFA. Note AntiFA wear black and are masked, not non-AntiA.
She is better known as moldylocks, when you search for her, discover she is a failed porn star, failed vintner (her broken bottle being used as an assault weapon), a feminist, and someone who went to the protest to get some "white scalps" per her now deleted Facebook page, which was resurrected by 4chan. The intent of moldlylocks was to cause violence.
