But...aren't we supposed to destroy (or at least hide) monuments that recognize the positive aspects and actions of individuals that were members of the Confederacy?
You seriously contend Mr. Howcott was a voluntary member of the southern confederacy, based upon a slave-owner who memorialized him as one would a cherished family pet. No surprise.
I'm southern born and raised, 100% eligible on paternal&maternal sides for membership in the Daughters of the Confederacy, but I'm not buying what they or you are selling. Go peddle it at your local white nationalist fair.
They are rare but do exist. Places like Darlington, South Carolina and Canton, Mississippi have statues/monuments dedicated to Black men and boys who aided the Confederacy in the war.
The inscription on Willis Howcott's memorial by his master William Hill Howcott reads...
“A tribute to my faithful servant and friend, Willis Howcott, a colored boy of rare loyalty and faithfulness, whose memory I cherish with deep gratitude”.
As we are learning, there may be all sorts of motivations for erecting statues or plaques. Let us be careful not to blur the distinction between a soldier and a "body servant" or a slave work gang attached to a confederate regiment or installation. They were not combatants. Even in the Union army there were slave holders who served as officers or commanders of units who had their own slave "body servants". The border (slave) states that remained in the Union had locally recruited units that often included or were led by slave owners. (Yes, these were Union forces) The body servants are sometimes listed on the muster rolls but not as combatant soldiers. I recall seeing some inquiries and warnings from HQ, not because they were slaves but because they might be eating or otherwise using military supplies.

Not only that, but prior to the Civil War, many, many people in the north grew rich as slave traders. No, they didn't have slaves... but they sold them to the plantations in the south. Is that ANY better than being a slave owner? Typical hypocrisy that shines brightly with so much of humanity in general. Condemn the slaveholders... as you sell them the slaves.

This is not to say that no black man ever fired a gun for the Confederacy. To be specific, in the “Official Records of the War of the Rebellion,” a collection of military records from both sides which spans more than 50 volumes and more than 50,000 pages, there are a total of seven Union eyewitness reports of black Confederates. Three of these reports mention black men shooting at Union soldiers, one report mentions capturing a handful of armed black men along with some soldiers, and the other three reports mention seeing unarmed black laborers.

Slavery is over. If you haven't noticed. At least in the US...
But, bless your heart for thinking that the dead give a single flying ****.
Do you want to dig everyone up and reanimate them and have the slaves smack their "owners" around for a few years? Would that make it better? History is HISTORY.
The future (that we live in today) doesn't owe the past or the major actors in the past, a thing.
All we get out of history is hindsight.
Don't repeat the same mistakes.
And the left, today? They are so intolerant of anything they don't like...THEY are the NAZIs. If you aren't with them, you shouldn't be anywhere. The PURE hate from the left should get 'em all at least a years worth of a stay (on their Obamacare - because they could keep their Psychiatrists) in a padded room in an institution for the mentally insane.
Quite a bunch of self serving *******s who believe that their way is the ONLY way...SCARY folks.
No matter how much the libs/left/progs try to make Trump the bad guy.... which party in the US is acting like ISIS these days? With the destruction of the statues of historical figures because they don't like 'em?
The left/progs/idiots only want to "tolerate" what THEY see "fit"?
GFY'all.
BTW? What are those evil United Daughters of the Confederacy trying to "sell" to you?
LOL!
