I don't see it that way. A statue or other memorial is a tribute. It is pro. In a museum a statue representing a negative value would be identified as such and used to show how that negative value was put forth by some and revered but then taken down. Statues and memorials are paying homage. If these Confederate statues are representing the social system of the pre-war South which is what scholarly writings are saying they are, then they really do need to go. Many were apparently ordered en masse from foundries by private parties to express their support of the old order.
I agree with you basically- I'm just saying they don't have to be in a museum. They can stand outside as remembrances and history with the proper documentation.
For example, the Vietnam War memorial in DC represents the names of the Vietnam dead who fought a much protested, lost, and essentially useless, war. Should we take it down or should we leave it as a reminder?
JFK was a drug addict womanizer, rename the airport and everything named after that scum.
Teddy Kennedy was a rapist and a killer. Anything named after him?
Mario Cuomo bilked NY, and especially Long islanders out of billions of dollars in his Shoreham Nuke plant scheme, Why are we building the Mario Cuomo Bridge?

It could be a thin line. But isn't it different when the memorial is not honoring a reviled philosophy against our basic values but the dead who thought they were defending our values, however misguided, or even against their will. They were conscripts after all. Any American soldier represents our ideals. Sometimes the human element involved in the decision making process egregious catastrophes. No memorials for them.
Mistakes of foreign policy and misunderstanding of threats imposed leading to dying in vain is a tragedy for all. Iraq, for instance. But the Confederate monuments represent a way of thinking and a philosophy that goes against our modern day belief system of what we as a nation stand for.
Liberals? You are determined to make this a right-left issue? I know plenty of liberals who don't want to "tear down monuments".
But everyone only knows liberals who do want to tear them down, right? Is that correct, or not?
Or, are progressives just radicals pretending to be liberals? I agree with that, do you?

Your sarcasm isn't that far off. Right after the Charlottesville tragedy many of us said the fascist left would use it to expand their insanity. Sure enough, it's happening. Removing Washington and Jefferson from history is now on their agenda. They are totalitarian fascist lunatics.

Human flaws are not the same as a social movement that defiles basic human dignity and rights. It may be a bit much to deny a hero honor because he was a naughty husband. At some point such behaviors may indeed need to be considered like certainly criminal misconduct or dishonorable discharge, for example. But adultery? Hmm. Maybe more of a personal situation? The wife could get a divorce but the slave was killed if he fled. But if these behaviors are pervasive and offensive in the public eye and indicate lack of character..in some cases..I could be convinced. No memorials for them.
The righties are v e r y b u s y creating threads about statues. Because it's much better for the Trump administration for this to be about monuments instead of white supremacy - which is what it's REALLY about.

Moderates are not on the side of the Alt-Right. That is why poll numbers are tanking and that is why Bannon has walking papers.
