The south lost. Why should they even have the right to have confederate statues? (generations, wisdom)

You could say the same about the former slaves after they were freed. Most had the opportunity to go to liberia. If it is really that bad for them here...
Nope. Stupid comment because Africans weren't brought voluntarily and came from over 45 different tribes...
Anyway, the former slaves weren't whining about anything, especially not dumb statues...

Well if you are brought somewhere involuntarily that is the typical situation to go back to where you were taken from. Either go back to your old tribe or move anywhere in Africa. It's not like you have to have a tribe to move to another city, state, or country. And what d you mean they weren't whining about anything. Remember the whole civil rights movement and segregation and nooses, and beatings and martin Luther king. Ringing a bell yet?
Ya' know, when the candidate of a major party demonizes a large group of the population, calls them deplorable, characterizes them as toothless, trailer park dwelling, meth using, sister ****ing inbreds (as some of you do in thread after thread), insults their ancestors you should maybe expect a bit of blowback.
As a note, before some of you call me a racist, skinhead Nazi, I'm originally from Pennsylvania and nine members of either side of the family died during the Civil War and I consider Davis, Lee, et al traitors.
Confederates were Americans. They also saw their state as country of its own. Saying 'an army of people from New York is coming to make all you people in South Carolina ...." to them was like saying 'England is going to come and make you do .....". They did not like it and they were ready to fight for it. Of course the Federal government had a different opinion.
In the end, it was Americans vs Americans. Kind of like it is today. Both sides know absolutely, with out a doubt, THEY are right. In the end, one side won but the winner also recognized the losers were were still neighbors, were still Americans and willing to accept them even though they had just fought a war with them. There was a sense of honor for each other from both sides. There was acknowledgement that both sides could honor their dead and their hero's. The looser's knew they had lost, they knew their life and country had changed. Their men had been killed. Their livestock had been killed. Their homes burned, their cities pillaged, their fields torn asunder. They could not help but know they lost. But .... they were still accepted as Americans and allowed to honor those that had fought for what they thought was right.
The people that lived through four years of death and destruction came back together and most shook hands and literally had ceremonies where they 'buried a hatchet'. These were the people, north and south, that created and erected these monuments. The people that participated in the 'disagreement'. The people that lived thru the war. The people that suffered the deaths of fathers and sons on both sides. They all felt the need to honor their fellow Americans and allow for healing and reconstruction of much of what was lost.
The people that lived through four years of hell saw the need, the right and righteousness of honoring both sides. So they did.
Now here we are, one hundred years plus later thinking that we know better, that we understand better what they did, what they went through, what they endured and what was needed to put our nation back together.
From the hate and animosity lately, I can not help but think our ancestors were on a better path of forgiveness than we are today.

The majority of Americans feel the statues should stay. In fact, the only demographic that feels they should come down are people who identified themselves as "strong Democrats". Even people in the South aren't in favor of taking them down. The only region of the country with a majority of people wanting them to come down is, ironically, the Northeast.
I don't think the Liberia analogy was a great one, but it is important to understand that in this debate, the moderate, mainstream position is letting the statues stay.
And the United States lost the War of 1812, or have you forgotten a little matter of having the White House burned? We all got over that and made Jackson a hero because he won one battle. Lee won a lot of battles, but eventually ran out of men and bullets.
The Light Brigade is held up as a heroic battle, but they were all killed. Many losers have been renowned for their bravery throughout history.
One of those lessons being rejected now is that you can lose and still be well regarded, or even heroic in the effort. That's sad.
Exactly! And, since when, has there been a prohibition against erecting statues memorializing those who did not prevail in conflicts? http://www.starkafterdarkonline.com/?p=856 You know, the Spartans subjugated and ENSLAVED the Mycenaeans, not to mention the sadism and brutality within their own 'culture'. Still, I don't see a cry to desecrate and destroy depictions of THEM.
<>It would be like the losing football team flying their school flag around the football field after a loss.<>
You do realize half the football teams in the country lose every weekend? All but ONE pro golfer? Half the baseball teams, basketball, and every other damned team sport except what, hockey and soccer where ties are allowed???
And all of them keep coming back again and again and their fans take pride in supporting them always.
"Pretty stupid comparison, OP, eh?"
