Democrats can't agree on whether they’re laying a trap for the GOP over President Donald Trump's response to the violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia — or about to step in a Republican-designed one themselves.

Democrats are pushing for votes on fighting domestic terrorism and hate crimes as well as other moves aimed at pressuring Republicans to repudiate Trump. But some strategists warn Democrats should be careful about how deeply they wade into a fraught debate over identity politics — particularly one focused on Confederate statues that risks dividing the electorate.

Republicans, they say, may be trying to goad Democrats into talking about hot-button issues that fire up the GOP base more than they energize liberal voters. These Democratic pollsters and message crafters say that staying focused on Trump's claim that "many sides" were at fault in Charlottesville is more productive than lingering on the question of whether to take down Confederate monuments, in most cases.

Then there's former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon, who says his opponents lose any time they focus on racial politics.

while liberals in the comments are angry at this article. I think it brings up some good points

Not only has Bannon said that, John Kasich and Bernie Sanders have also said that.

No Sh*t. You want to turn moderates into conservatives really quick? Start tearing down history, memories. How many people have memories of playing in these parks around these statues as kids? How about removing the statues and replacing them with statues of missy elliott and jaden smith? Good way to PO a lot of people. And it plays right into conservatives playbook, as a general rule conservatives want to conserve and liberals want to change.

Speaking as a moderate Democrat, I have no strong feelings on statues. My belief is that whoever put the statue up should have the final say in if it stays or goes. Meaning if you don't live in the town where the statue is, don't show up to protest or protect it. It's not your business.

The issue of Confederate Statues has no business being a national issue. Let the communities who pay for the statue make that call. Democrats would be better off focusing on issues that are more universally applicable to all Americans, like healthcare.

People recognize moral cowardice for what it is.

We have Antifa thugs brutalizing people in the streets, and the left wants to re-fight the civil war against statues.

Blacks lag behind even immigrants who come to this country with nothing in their pockets, and the left wants to pretend that it is because of a statue of Robert E. Lee rather than horrible attitudes in the black community.

We have had a massive string of Islamic terror attacks in and out of this country since 9/11, an the left would rather tear down statues of Jefferson and Washington than deal with that reality.

We have had and assasination attempt against our sitting president, our majority whip and four others shot by a crazed Bernie Sanders suppporter, celebrities and a news media that has normlized images of violence against Trump and the right, and the filthy, dirty, degenerate left want to pretend that statues that have been there for decades are the real problem.

Meanwhile, no one on the left is suggesting we take down statues or Robert Byrd.

Again,it is simply a matter of people recognizing cowardice when they see it, and those who stand with the cowards are going to pay when the chickens come to roost.
