Trump isn't a Republican politician. He ran on that platform but obviously he didn't capture the hearts of the entire GOP. Like MOST rational people he want's what he want's, a little from column R and a little from column D and maybe a bit from I. Folks who are hardline to their party regardless of where it's going are not leaders.
