churches are non profit businesses, thus they dont pay taxes. but their buildings were also damaged in harvey, and i would be willing to bet that they pay flood insurance premiums like everyone else in the area does, so they are entitled to receive federal funds from the damaged caused by harvey.

FEMA does not reimburse nonprofit organizations for expenses spent on helping people in disaster situations.
FEMA in some cases does reimburse nonprofit organizations to restore facilities that were damaged in a disaster. But only if as part of their regular non-disaster operations they provide essential utility, medical, educational, or emergency services.
These might include the below, if they are properly set up and have submitted the necessary paperwork to show they provide services in one of the above categories:
Libraries, museums and zoos
Community centers
Disability advocacy and service providers
Homeless shelters and rehabilitation facilities
Social and human services organizations for children, youth and adults
Senior citizen centers
Some churches who provide the above services have set the facilities up as 501c3 organizations separate from their religious facilities. If so, and if their facilities have suffered damage, they can file for reimbursement. I'm personally familiar with a church operation in southeast Texas that met those conditions, had a facility - physically and financially separate from the church itself - that was damaged during Hurricane Carla, and received FEMA funds.
That seems fair to me.
It's a shame when smart people who know what they're talking about get overshadowed and drowned out by those who don't and who also won't listen.
Guess I am having a problem understanding why this bothers some here? Is it because trump said it, would you be as upset if Obama or Bill Clinton had said it?
Churches NEED to put money into the tax funds....especially those like Joel Osteen. And the rich catholic church.
It's not about what president said it, althou the current guy is a pretty sad example.
Then what, everyone drowns and businesses just go away...it's called natural damages. Out of people's control. Then if everyone moved to states like PA, no big disasters happen there...right?
No they should not as long as they don't pay taxes. If that's the case I'm sure he would make the same offer to mosques as well?
Yes, to mosques as well. And there were plenty of mosques in Houston that did open their doors to be shelters. There are also a lot of Muslims volunteering to help flood victims. Google it. They're doing it because tragedy rings out the best in people, but also at least one group is doing it for something that's going on right now. It's not Ramadan, but something similar I suppose. (I'm not trying to be offensive, I just don't remember the holiday or what it's about).

So, should other non-profits and charities also not be entitled to FEMA funds?
