They offer counseling to all students and staff, for any reason, year round.... They're just pointing out that if people are upset by this, they can use the benefits they have.
I agree, silly that someone would actually get super upset by a non-required event but... Shrug.
Do you know how this evolved. Many boomers were beat as children by parents or other family members.....a brush, a belt or a switch. You name it. The nuns at school would walk around with a ruler in their hand ready to strike your knuckles if they deemed you did something wrong. And that could be anything. They didn't want to grow up like their parents so yes they over compensated when they had kids. They wanted their kids to be treated the opposite of what they went through.
It isn't about the unearned trophies or lack of corporal punishment. It's because these kids are unable to handle criticism or deal with opposing opinions because parents stopped letting them fail or even go outside and play without a tether (cell phone). Kids need to learn how to deal with adversity and differences on their own. They need to suffer the consequences of not remembering to bring their homework to school instead of mom bringing to the school. They need to get zeros if they have unexcused absences and miss a test or fail to turn in their work on the due date. They need to encounter bullies and figure out how to deal with them. They need to build a fort all by themselves and figure out how to fix it if it isn't right.
We have failed this generation. Learning how to be self sufficient and confident in oneself needs to be learned at a young age, and these days parents are afraid of the infinitesimally small chance of kidnapping or whatever to allow them to go out and learn it.
It's like the immune system. If you allow your kids to be exposed to germs, there is a slight chance they will get really ill, but if you never let their immune system be exposed to germs, it doesn't build up any resistance.
then should just say nope you can't talk here. just as one group is free to say mostly what it wants another is free to say not on my campus.
It's not just your campus. Others share the campus and invited him to speak. It isn't mandatory. Don't like it, then don't go. It's not rocket science.
Good for them. I suppose they've had a hard time with alumni donations lately, or enrollment is down slightly. Berkeley has a good academic reputation, but there are plenty of other schools without these problems. If they can't protect their students, then what good are they?
