Free speech has always been a tactic used by the state to grant the illusion that all voices in this nation are valued.
We cannot let free speech become a tactic that asks oppressed people to tolerate their oppressors in hopes of peaceful compromise.
I do not understand how we can fill the streets demanding justice and then magically separate ourselves from the movement to protect conservative voices who want a soapbox and our death certificates.
You don't honestly expect Berkeley to come out and admit it's liberals that are the source of all of the violence do you? Of course they're going to say "from all sides" when everyone knows the overwhelming majority of it comes from the left.
I'm not even disputing that. The extremists who show up range from far left to no politics at all. The point of my comment is... the OP made it seem like Berkeley was blaming the conservatives for the violence. The article did not make that claim at all that the conservatives were the source of the violence. It said the security was for the EXTREMISTS.
You do know that the security is not to protect people from the speakers, right? It's for the inevitable crazy group of protesters who wait all year for a nice high profile event to get drunk/high and come to cause trouble. Those people care about as much about politics as I care about fishing (not much).
That's not true at all. These people are very political. Read their material. Do some just like to smash things? Probably, but I bet most are dedicated to their politics.
It is the world we live in now. It sucks that people can't be open to hearing what people on the other side believe.
I agree, there shouldn't have to be any security.
It's not "people" -- it's democrats.
Liberals speak all the time, and republicans never riot or beat them up......
