Secession from the union is an entirely different matter than refusing to obey a federal mandate.

Many other states, including mine, have refused federal mandates and never went to war with the union over any of them. States challenge federal law all the time.

In Idaho's case, a Republican Governor sent the Idaho National Guard to block our borders when the feds refused to stop shipping nuclear waste into my state after the Governor mandated our repository would take no more, period. The trucks turned around, and the issue went to court. In the end, Idaho won.

Governors can mandate too. And when it comes to a conflict between state and federal, any state can sue the federal government over it's actions.

That's what the courts are for. Only they, not you or me, decide these matters. By law, the laws our representatives made. It's always 50/50 in court; sometimes the state wins, sometimes the federal govt. wins.

Trump can't dictate, no matter how much he thinks he can. Or you think he can.

We are a republic, and once in a while a state reminds us of that fact by defying the federal government. California is not the only state that has defied one or more of Trump's mandates. It won't be the last, either.
And not a one of them will ever secede from the union.

If some state tried to flaunt a federal law such as ... let's say, Obamacare, or some part thereof ... the righties here would be cheering them on no end. But when a state flaunts a federal law that they like - such as immigration laws - all of a sudden breaking federal laws is the worst thing in the world, and the legislators in the states should be rounded up and arrested, tried for treason, the state should be nuked, and all kinds of other harsh punishments.

Yes, indeed. Some states refused Obamacare completely, and others only signed on with part of the program.

It is within a state's rights. If the citizens of the state disagree with their government, they have recourse. Within the state.

The courts decide as many matters between a state's citizens and it's government as they decide issues between the states and the federal government.

That's how its supposed to be in any nation of laws.

Thank God for it.

If public opinion was to rule us, our laws would change with every shift in direction the breeze blows.

Just who will be doing all this reining in? California, and any other state should have the right to disassociate itself with other states, not succesion, not war, more like a no-fault divorce. Cali would do quite well on it's own, while most states would drown. A previous poster says "All the other states should sue California". At least three will join them, maybe more.

Agreed, educated single people without kid(s) would be more likely to stay in the city than married educated people with kids. They would rather move out to the suburbs or to places like Nevada, Arizona, Utah, etc... with a more family friendly environment.

Plus places like NYC, SF, LA, DC, are very materialistic places. Whereas the midwest and the south are more of a getting married and starting a family type of place.

Besides the weather and scenery, there's hardly any benefits of living in California. It is impossible to start your own business, buy land and build your own home, and purchase a firearm incase if you want to go hunting or target shooting. Plus housing is very expensive and you can end up homeless if you miss a paycheck. No wonder why so many people run for the hills and end up in states like Texas.

You should see all of the businesses that are started where I live. Small-minded people may find it impossible; people with actual talent and drive do it and are successful in doing so.

They've been crying about states' rights since the Civil War; now that the shoe is on the other foot, they can't handle it.

After 16 yrs in that West Coast cesspool I gladly embraced Minnesota. I'll never go back not even to visit.....
